Is Mercy Johnson the new Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde?

Oddly enough, if you think about it Mercy Johnson's celebrity life is where Omotola's fame was a few years ago.

It goes without saying that Mercy Johnson is one of the biggest female celebrities in Nigeria.

With a popularity that stretches from Lagos to Kutiwenji in Niger state and beyond it is no wonder that any story about her or her family (no matter how trivial) is bound to trend.

The latest news buzz about the screen goddess is about how she might be raring to go and Have her fourth baby after having three kids in three years. 

Within the last five years, the star actress has transitioned from a movie vixen into a bonafide celebrity. The TV screen cannot hold her anymore. Mercy Johnson is larger than the movie screen. In celeb-speak, we describe her as being larger than life right now.

If we take a look at Mercy Johnson now we can see a lot of similarities between her and another mega star by the name ofOmotola Jalade-Ekeinde. A supportive husband, more than two kids, the dominance of the movie scene and a cult-like fandom are the common traits that both stars have.

Presently, Mercy Johnson is where Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde was a few years back ago, at the topmost layer of the Nollywood-celebrity stratosphere. The mother of four has ascended to that realm where people know her by just her first name.

Let's take a look at this. Mercy Johnson got married in 2011 and while many actresses have reduced their screen time to accommodate their marital status or bowed out from the scene, Mercy Johnson is still very much active. She is currently on the set of a new movie after giving birth back in December 2015.

You can also say the same of Omotola Jalade-EKeinde. She got married in 1996 and six years later she already had four kids. During this period Omotola's fame never wavered in the eyes of the public or in the movie scene as well. Some will say it blossomed.

Apart from this, Mercy Johnson and Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde both have supportive husbands who have encouraged them to continue with their movie professions. "My wife tells me about her acting. Most times she even complains that some actors she acts love scenes with have mouth or body odour that she can’t wait to leave this scene.  So I even pity her on what she has to go through and endure being an actress" said Captain Matthew Ekeinde in his 2013 interview with Entertainment Express.

He understands the demands of my job and has no problems with my career. He simply gives me space to fly" said Mercy Johnson in a 2015 interview with The Entertainer.

Right now, Mercy Johnson is arguably the biggest Nigerian actress. You can make a case for Funke Akindele but the Yoruba actress has mainly milked her Jenifer character into being a household name while Mercy Johnson has stacked her filmography with extensive Idumota roles.

While Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde has fully immersed herself with New Nollywood of red carpets and movie premieres, Mercy Johnson is still churning out home video movies like her predecessor was a few years ago. If you go back in time it would easy to see that Mercy Johnson is right where Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde was- the precipice of mega stardom.
